Starting her career in teaching in 1979, Susan began by instructing small business operators on how to ensure that their business was being run well, and that they were not being taken advantage of by banks or clients alike. The services of what was then known as S&B Administrative Services included working with everything from general administration through to managing cashbooks. As this business grew, Susan began providing in-house education and administrative services to larger companies. It was during this time that Susan was approached by a large training organisation to teach for them part time which she accepted graciously.
Over the next 8 years, Susan progressed into full time lecturing for large training organisations until she was invited to work with HIA NSW presenting courses that Susan had developed to comply with the then Gold Licence course required by the NSW Department of Fair Trading. It was while training for HIA in 1992 that Susan began the development of Back to Basic’s very first course, the Contractors Management Program. Support came from several licensed builders and engineers within the industry, in conjunction with the valuable support from MBA Newcastle. Susan’s goal was to simplify the complex method of teaching that is prolific within the construction industry. Back to Basics was born from this course and the course became accredited in 1997 and was known as the Certificate IV in Contractors Management Program NTIS 91021NSW, still recognised by the Office of Fair Training NSW as a part of the education requirements for licensing. At the same time Back to Basics Business Training Pty Ltd became an accredited RTO in April 1997.
For the next 10 years, Susan worked in conjunction with MBA in several states providing courses across Australia to the construction industry and continued to develop our courses in conjunction with licensed builders Australia wide.
It was in 2007 that Susan parted ways with the MBA amicably and began to operate Back to Basics as an independent entity. Susan continues to work in the development team to this day as her passion has (and will) always be in helping to train and up-skill people, especially those who don’t think that they can. In addition to being the Managing Director of Back to Basics, Susan volunteers with Riding for the Disabled NSW and has not only assisted them to become an RTO, but has been integral in the development of new qualifications related to the care of the disabled.
