How To Become A Licensed Builder In The ACT

Domestic, Low Rise, Medium Rise And Open

In accordance with the ACT Govt Planning Websites Build, Buy or Renovate section there are 4 types of builders licence. The main 3 are:

  • Class A Builder (Unlimited) – For building work other than specialist building work; For building work of unlimited height on any Building Code of Australia (BCA) class of work.
  • Class B Builder – (Medium Rise) – For building work (other than specialist building work) in relation to a building that is three storeys or lower; For basic building work.
  • Class C Builder (Low Rise/Residential) – For building work (other than specialist building work) in relation to a building that is two storeys or lower and is a class 1, 2 or 10a building; For building work (other than specialist building work) in relation to a building that is a class 10b structure (other than a swimming pool or swimming pool fence) and is ancillary to a building that is two storeys or lower and is a class 1, 2 or 10a building; and For basic building work.

 

For the majority of residential works, either the Medium or Low Rise licences are required and as part of the application requirements for these, you will need to have completed a CPC40120 – Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) for the Low Rise, or the CPC50220 – Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) for the Medium Rise. 

In all classes, you must have no less than 2 years full time relevent experience, 1 year must be after your qualification is completed.
